Genuine referrals and testimonials

This week I’ve given some testimonials and recommended several North Devon businesses to others asking for recommendations. I don’t do this lightly.

I’m very happy to recommend businesses I have used or to suggest those who I believe offer a good service. I’m also very happy to give a testimonial to those businesses I have used who provide good service or products.

In my opinion, what makes these valuable is that these are individual recommendations, not anonymous ratings or unattributed comments. Also, they are not prompted by anyone else. I give recommendations and testimonials because they are deserved.

What matters to you when giving testimonials or receiving recommendations? What makes them useful?

Holidays are a must have!

I have just come back from a 4 night city break in Madrid – 4 days where we did nothing but explore the city, watch the world go by from the outdoor street cafes/bars/restaurants, eat, drink and generally forget about life and the problems back home!

It’s our first real break from home in just over 3 years – the occasional weekend away, but these seem to be so rushed that we come back more exhausted than when we went – and boy did I enjoy it.

Nothing happened of note while we were away – the business survived, the animals were well looked after, the email in-box wasn’t too full and after just 2 days back I seem to be back in control – so we might just do it again!

When was the last time you had a real break?

Holidays are a must have to get the body & mind fully recharged! I don’t know why I left it so long & we’re going to book another one soon!

Are UK businesses investing? Complete this poll

Are UK businesses investing? According to some politicians, they’re not. According to some business surveys, they’re not. But in my various guises I’ve spoken to a lot of businesses who are investing.

Now investment does not only include equipment or physical things. In our current economy, investment in knowledge and skills is often just as important, but these can be investments of time. This form of investment does not not necessarily show up in surveys only recognising investments of money.

I believe businesses in the UK are investing millions of hours of time in development. When you consider that there are 4.5 million small businesses in the UK, that would be 4.5 million hours alone if each invests just one hour. Of course, some will invest nothing, while others will invest hundreds or thousands of hours.

What is the value of this investment if time is charged at £10, £25, £50, £100 or more per hour? What is the real picture?

As a start I thought it would be interesting to do a quick poll and see how UK businesses are investing. Please take part and pass on to your connections.

From my own perspective, my business is investing in equipment, in software and in personal and skills development. I am sure many more are doing the same.
