The proposed Atlantic Array is a project to generate 25 gigawatts (GW) of new generation off the coast of North of Cornwall and Devon by 2020. According to RWE, it should provide power for around 1.1 million average UK households, equivalent to over 40% of the domestic electricity consumption for the South West of England or over 90% of the domestic electricity consumption for Wales. While I’m sure most support the concept of renewable power, these schemes never seem to be straightforward.
There’s quite a lot in the press about the visual impact of hundreds of turbines out to sea and some think that it could destroy Lundy Island’s tourist trade and the fishing industry. On the other hand, the power generated would be, on the face of it, clean and not produce any CO2.
The factors I think we need to bear in mind are:
- What is the environmental impact of equipment construction (eg at the overseas manufacturers and UK assemblers)?
- What is the environmental impact of installation?
- What is the impact on wildlife/habitat?
- How efficient will the turbines be?
- Are there economic benefits for North Devon (the array will need continuous maintenance over its 25-year life)?
- Will this technology be obsolete before/soon after installation?
- Are there better alternatives?
- On balance, will the environmental/economic impacts be positive or negative?
It is worth bearing in mind that major discoveries of gas are being made onshore in the UK. Recently, a company found 200 trillion cubic feet of gas under the ground in Lancashire. Massive gas fields such as this could provide a supply of energy for 30 to 50 years, although once again there are environmental impacts and the method of extraction is controversial.
The choices are not easy. What would be good would be to debate the merits of different options on the basis of facts and actual data so that we can decide what would be best for North Devon.

Please can we start a reasoned and informed debate?
The decisions on projects such as these are likely to be taken at a national level so do we need to lobby MPs and other organisations with our opinions?
