Superfast broadband for North Devon delayed

The Connecting Devon and Somerset programme, which has been heralded as bringing superfast broadband to North Devon, has been delayed yet again.

According to a Connecting Devon and Somerset quote published by BBC News about the contract with BT, “both sides have been unable to reach agreement over ‘significant issues’.”

Yet again connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk has not been updated with this important news and its Twitter account, which only promotes its events, has not been updated since 7 January. It only carries good news.

I think this is the biggest reason why such a critical infrastructure project should not be managed by county councils.

Barnstaple to get superfast broadband in 2013

Openreach, BT’s local network business, has announced that Barnstaple will be upgraded for fibre superfast broadband in 2013. The town joins Bideford which was added to the programme earlier this year.

This is good news for businesses in North Devon, although must not take our attention away from the other towns and remote areas that have not yet been added.

North Devon businesses – and residents – need to continue to demonstrate their need for this vital service. Broadband availability is a major consideration when businesses are looking to relocate and North Devon needs to be able to offer this vital infrastructure to attract more businesses and entrepreneurs here. Existing businesses need this capability to be able to compete evenly across the UK and globally.

Is 15,000 enough?

As of the 14th March 15,278 have completed the survey to get faster broadband in Somerset in Devon – when we look at the map there is a good representation in North devon, but is this really enough – surely there are close to a million people living in these two counties with some rather large towns in Exeter/Plymouth/Taunton etc… and we can only find 15,278 people to complete the survey.

Will it be enough to persuade the powers that be that control the spending of the available funds that we really do want faster broadband.

North Devon traditionally loses out to the big hitting cities in Devon and we really do need to make our voices heard, so if you haven’t already, please complete the survey here http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/ and pass the message on to as many people as you know.

The more the merrier, as I don’t think 15,000 is enough!
