Sailing. 1977 to 2012
I learned to sail at Rudyard Lake, Staffordshire in May 1977. I learned very quickly. I was on a weeks camp with Great Wyrley scouts. Mr Bish would take groups of boys around the lake in a Wayfarer dinghy. I was waiting for one of these trips, when Mr Bish got out of the dinghy to see if any other scouts wanted to join us on a trip around the lake, leaving me aboard alone. While he was gone, the dinghy drifted away from the Jetty, (the very same jetty Top Gear finished their amphibious car race). I learned very quickly how to sail. So impressed with my quickly learned skill, Mr Bish let me take the trips around the lake. Do you think that could happen now?
Taking mom & dad a spin around the lake on parents visiting day.
Bringing back the scouts after one of the trips around the lake. Notice the oars are out, so the wind must have died.
During the mid 1980’s, I bought a 50% share with my brother, in a Osprey dinghy. We kept it at Instow Sailing Club.
